Washington, January 12,2025-Special prosecutor jack Smith, Who led federal lawsuits against former US President Donald Trump, has announced his resignation from his post.
Smith had overseen two important cases against trump. The first case was related to his alleged role in the violent riots on capital hill on January 6, 2021, while the second case was related to allegations of illegally removing confidential documents from the white house and keeping them.
Recently, the court gave verdict in favour of Trump in both the cases. Washington D.C. District Court Judge Tanya Chutkan Dismissed all the charges against Trump in the election interference case. Similarly, Judge Aileen cannon in a Florida court dismissed the case related to confidential documents and declared the appointment of a special prosecutor illegal.
in his resignation, jack Smith said, “I am taking this step under the Justice Department’s policy, which prohibits criminal prosecution of a sitting president. However, I want to make it clear that we continue to have a firm belief in the logic and validity of the prosecution.
Smith also wrote, “The Government has not changed its position on the validity of the charges against the accused. This decision has been taken only due to the change in the current circumstances. When the defendant has been Re-Elected president, it is not appropriate to continue the ongoing criminal case against him.
Donald Trump Had already called These cases political revenge and accused them of misuse of the justice system. His lawyers said, “This is a big victory for justice and the rule of law. This is an important step towards preventing political abuse of the justice systems.
After Smith’s Resignation, the justice department said that they are considering the appointment of a new special prosecutor. At present, there is no active investigation going on against Trump.
